Turmeric Gelatin
Fermented turmeric offers a wonderful boost to the immune system. The gelatin adds even more benefit!
Ingredients
- 2 cups fermented turmeric beverage. I use my turmeric bug.* (I blend approx. 1/2 cup turmeric bug with lemon or lime juice to make 2 cups. I even add some water if needed.)
- 3 tablespoons gelatin. I use naturally derived gelatin from grass fed cows. I like Great Lakes Gelatin.*
- sweetener to taste (non-GMO xylitol, stevia, or raw honey)
Instructions
- Whisk the fermented beverage with gelatin.
- Heat the mixture over low heat to allow gelatin to dissolve. Do not overheat in order to protect the probiotic microorganisms.
- Add sweetener to taste.
- Pour into mold and refrigerate.
*Turmeric bug recipe can be viewed here.
*Great Lakes Gelatin found here.ย (The green labeled collagen hydrolysate Great Lakes makes a wonderful supplement but will not gel when combined with liquid.)

Andrea, where do you find gelatin from grass-fed cows?
Andrea Fabry says
I like the Great Lakes brand:

I’m sure there are others – but this is the one I use.

How much do you eat per day? Thanks!
Andrea Fabry says
When I make this I eat a couple of cubes a day. Not really sure the optimal amount, though. I try to listen to my body and go from there.

Andrea, this recipe calls for 2 cups fermented turmeric beverage, and you say “I use my turmeric bug.*” Your recipe for the Turmeric bug calls for 3/4 cup water, and it never says to add any more when you are feeding it! So how do you get 2 cups to use in this recipe? If you are using a small amount of the bug to make a beverage, what beverage are you making & using?
I only see one beverage in your recipes using the bug. It is a turmeric lime beverage. I am making the bug, and have been trying to figure out how I’m going to use it. I don’t care for lime!! So pretty sue that recipe would be out!
Any suggestions? Your site is about all I’ve found on it! I’ve done a search, but haven’t had a lot of luck! And I’m not very imaginative!!
I really want to take advantage of the power of a turmeric bug!
Thanks!!

I was JUST now making this when I came into check the computer! I will correct this recipe. Thanks for pointing it out. I just now took 1/4 cup of my bug and blended with 1 cup of lemon juice and then added water to make it two cups! I apologize. This is very open for creativity. The goal is to get some of the turmeric bug into a liquid that you like. I added some xylitol. It’s delicious! You could combine with some kombucha, some juice, but I like the lime or lemon. Let me know what you think, Billie.

Thanks Andrea!! (BTW, my granddaughter’s name is Andrea! ๐ )
So (going back to he bug) you don’t add anymore water to the bug after the first 3/4 cup, unless doing a continuous brew, and replacing what you used?
I’m on day 3 of starting my bug, so it’s not ready yet. (At least I don’t think it is. Doesn’t seem to be bubbling yet.) I might try lemon. As I said, I really don’t care for lime.
Thanks again!
Andrea Fabry says
Exactly, Billie. I refrigerate when it bubbles and use it from there or keep adding water, sugar, turmeric for continuous and leave it out. Either seems to work fine. Do you like coconut water? That would be good to add to the gelatin recipe. The turmeric does come through in the gelatin unless you have a strong juice or lots of xylitol or stevia. Since one cube goes a long way I don’t mind the flavor. Everyone is different. I’d like to hear back on how yours turns out if you get a chance. I added a little whey to one of mine that was slow in fermenting.
crazywoman/Billie says
Thanks for the replies!
Still no bubbles yet. I added some Water Kefir yesterday hoping to give it a fermentation boost. Hope it wasn’t a mistake! I have whey, guess I should have used that.
How long does it usually take for it to bubble? Sorry for all the questions.
crazywoman/Billie says
I forgot your question about coconut water. The only time I’ve had coconut water (and it’s been years) is when I had “fresh” coconut. I do like that. But haven’t bought a fresh coconut in a very long time.
(We always called it coconut milk when I was growing up. Now I realize it is really coconut water, and coconut milk comes from the “meat”.
Should I be adding water to this along while I’m trying to get it to ferment? It only mentions 3/4 cup water the first time. So I’ve only got about 8oz right now (day 4).
Andrea Fabry says
I am really surprised it’s not bubbling. Can you close the jar tightly and see if something happens? I see no issue with adding the whey or water kefir. You can add a little water – shouldn’t seem to matter. You’ve got me on the edge of my seat now ๐
crazywoman/Billie says
I have had it with a loose lid (coffee filter/rubber band). I can try closing it tightly. I thought it needed air.
I’ll try that. It’s getting pretty thick (just fed it), so I think I’ll add a little water, and put a tight lid on it, and see what happens.
I’m really sorry to keep bothering you!
I’m doing KT, WK, and MK. All doing well. Tho my first WK & KT which I ordered from Cultures For Health never did any good. A lovely lady in NC shared with me (including MK). I never imagined I’d have trouble with the Turmeric Bug. I should add that I am using pwd Turmeric.
I couldn’t understand why I’d need a qt jar if I weren’t adding more water, but that’s what you said, and that’s what I’m using. Thought maybe when it started fermenting & bubbling, it might need it.
Thanks again, for all your help!!
Hope I like using this stuff once I get it going! ๐

I think the problem is that it’s powdered. Do you have access to turmeric root? Whole Foods has it periodically. My powdered has worked with apple peel but not as well as the root. With your experience I’m surprised too. Has to be the powder. It normally does need oxygen – I’m thinking of the closed lid as a second ferment sort of. I enjoy the dialogue! ๐
crazywoman/Billie says
I haven’t had a chance to get back in & check this.
I did find turmeric root at Natural Grocers awhile back (Don’t have a whole foods), but it was $20 a pound, and I didn’t buy it! Not that the powdered is cheap!!
I should have bought some apples when I went shopping Wed, but forgot about it. I live in the country, and don’t go in every day. I may not be back until Wed. I’ll try to remember to get apples then, and try some apple in it, and see if it will help it. I’ve got too much turmeric powder & sugar in it now to give up on it if I don’t have to. It still seems OK, just not bubbling yet. The last couple of days I’ve only added sugar to it. Trying to see if that might give it a boost. I did add a little more water after I asked you about that. It is up to 12 oz now (the turmeric & sugar come up to about 8 or 10 oz when it has sit a while & settled).
Andrea Fabry says
Well, I admire your persistence! Keep me posted. It can’t hurt to keep going. Another thought is to add some water kefir or kombucha to nudge it along.
crazywoman/Billie says
OK, I did add more Water Kefir the other day. (Hadn’t seen your last reply until now.) I meant to add Whey, but forgot, and added the WK. Anyway, I do now have fizz!! So if I have fizz, it is ready right?
After all this, and all that Turmeric & sugar, I’m not sure I’m even goon like it. Or still have any idea how to use it. I have used the Turmeric pwd a lot. Sprinkle it on & in a lot of what I cook, and haven’t minded the taste. But I’m not sure I’m gonna like this. I did try making a glass of lemon/turmeric drink today. I managed to drink it, but not something I enjoy by any means. I just put in a little of the Tbug, a little lemon juice, some stevia, and then water. Not really bad, but not very good either. :/
Oh, I had finally gotten an apple, and added a small slice of that to it too, but it had actually already gotten a small amount of bubbles, but I added it anyway to see if I could give it a boost.
Hopefully I’ll find a way to use it that is more pleasing.
I wonder how much one needs to use to be healthful? I haven’t had much luck in finding much about it doing searches!
Thanks for all your help!!

My thought is that this is medicinal and a small amount can go a long way. It does sound like it’s fermented now. You can always check with pH strips to see if the acidity level is at a 4 or less. I would add more citrus to it. I think you’ve made something good – now it’s a matter of integrating it into your diet. I would suggest gelatin. One square a day – kind of like a vitamin of some sort.
